Soulfire’s previous setup at Island Time Bar and Grill

Soulfire at Island Time Bar and Grill

Island Time Bar and Grill: Soulfire (4-7pm; high-energy danceable covers that bring jazz and rockabilly flair). Start your weekend checking out this fun band at this tucked-away venue by the Pentagon. Sit outside, near the Potomac River, on what should be a beautiful evening (I mean, look at that friggin’ view). This show’s bonus: guest drummer, Scott Schreiber (from Champagne Velvet).

DL Funk Band at Clare and Don’s Beach Shack

Clare and Don’s Beach Shack: DL Funk Band (5:30pm; FunkBand with R&B feel with a Go Go HipHop Rock swing). If you’d rather stay around the Falls Church area, catch this other outdoor show at The Shack. No need to go into DC to catch some groovy funk and go-go. Video clip here.

Saturday, the 26th

Maiden Band and Loose Change
at OysterFest at Settle Down Easy Brewing

Start your day early and enjoy food from the extensive seafood options, as you listen to a pair of local bands: Maiden Band (12:30-2:30pm; Soulful/Rootsy/jammy covers) and Loose Change (3pm; Drinkin band). Settle Down Easy Brewery in Falls Church.

Almost Queen at The State Theater
JMM Funk at Dogwood Tavern

Yes, that is a photo of Almost Queen, in front of one of their actual crowds. I caught them once…they look and sound just like the real thing. Highly recommended for a great time, and likely to sell out. Get your tickets here ($40; Doors 7pm; show at 8:30). Then when it ends, head on down to Dogwood Tavern to catch the second half of JMM Funk (9:30pm), an Arlington band that features an awesome father (drums) and son (killer guitar) duo.

New Potato Caboose at The Renegade

I personally never heard of this band, but they are a veteran touring American jam band known for their energetic live performances and eclectic blend of musical styles. Their sound draws heavily from the roots of the jam band scene, incorporating elements of rock, folk, Americana, and improvisational jams reminiscent of groups like the Grateful Dead and Little Feat. Tickets are $35; 8-11pm; @The Renegade, where weekend shows are usually $5 and go from 9:30-1:30.
